Blog 10....Skills audit ... Where I began to where I am and how I can improve

Image
Below is a skills audit based on performance analysis. It is a comparison of where I feel my skill levels were when I first analysed to where I feel I am at now (1 being bad 10 being good). How each skill is defined in this audit:- Communication- Speaking to the athlete, coach, scout or any other department or person that requires the analysis in a clear and concise way that gets across the points you want to make. Developing relationships- Having the trust of those who you are analysing/speaking to so that they are invested in what you are telling them. Organizational- Being able to multi task, work to deadlines etc Creativity- Getting your message across, in different ways that are suitable to different people as not everyone will understand things the same way Adaptive- Being able to adapt to any sudden changes in any aspect. Reflective- Ability to look back and assess previous situations, what you did well, what you can improve on. Filming- Being able to film, from the right angles...

Blog 9- Future career

Image
The Plan The aim for the future is my own coaching business which will do one to one and team sessions but will specialise in working with people from all backgrounds who are suffering with their mental health and using sport, exercise and activity to help them. This is something close to my heart due to personal circumstances of some close people to myself as well as my own personal battles. Rosso, Dekas and Wrzesniewski, (2010)  suggest that having a job that has meaning has been shown to have the benefits of increased motivation, personal fulfilment , job satisfaction, engagement, empowerment, career development as well as decreased stress and absenteeism. According to a 2011 study by Holt, Kingsley, Tink and Scherer, there are several developmental benefits associated with sport participation.  Benefits reported include relationships with coaches, making new friends, and teamwork/social skills. Personal benefits reported include emotional control, exploration, ...

Blog 8- Motivational videos

“This is Football!” - Motivational Video (Alsido Football, 2016)  In a 2015 study into motivational videos and academia, Nicolle Grant found that a motivational video positively affected most students in various ways. They were more accepting of failure, less anxious about their performance and more motivated to work at improving performance. With regards to sport Barwood, Weston, Thelwell and Page, (2009) suggest that music and video can have a beneficial impact on exercise, especially that of a higher intensity as it helps prolong the ability to ward of negative effects. In a study by Tracey, (2011), the athlete who took part used a personal motivational video whilst competing and stated they found it to be useful and very helpful in focusing his attention. During various training and competition phases it enhanced his motivation, helped him to feel more confident and keep on top of his emotions. He used imagery for motivational and cognitive functions and felt more able to...

Blog 7- My Placement

Image
My placement was due to take place with Oldham Athletic and one of their junior teams after I had emailed and asked if there was potential to volunteer there. They replied swiftly initially and put me in touch with the relevant person to sort this out and soon we were talking about the process of hopefully getting this all in place. Unfortunately it then took another 6 weeks before they got back to me again as they got furloughed over the Christmas period so at the end of January we started the ball rolling with what was needed to make this happen. After the reading and signing of some policies (Equality policy and social media code of conduct) and sending them proof of my DBS, it was again a few weeks before I heard from them again and this time it was a request to complete an online safeguarding course from the operations and safeguarding manager. A couple weeks and zoom meetings later and we finally had the ball rolling. We had a measuring play philosophy decided an...

Blog 6- Performance analysis and me

Image
When I first started coaching I tried to analyse every aspect of the game for the team I was coaching but it turns out what I thought was analysing to help the team was actually just making statements. "Get the ball wide", "move out as a defensive line", or "don't back off him" were common things that were communicated to my team. At half time I would remind the players that they all had their own individual jobs to do as well as working as a team but the information I wasn't giving them, it turns out, was the important part and would have been a great help to them. If I could go back now, these statements would probably sound more like:- Get the ball wide because their fullbacks are playing very narrow and are also not very fast. Move out as a defensive line because their striker likes to stay in line with the last man and is exploiting the gaps left when we aren't in line. Don't back off him and give him time to find a pass, he doesn'...

Blog 4- Software/Hardware used in performance analysis

Image
What is hardware? What is software? (GCFLearn.org, 2018) Hardware The following are some examples of hardware used with performance analysis:- Laptops GPS Video cameras Smart watches Drones Heart monitors Mobile phones Speed gun SD card Television/Monitor Inertial sensor Software The following are some examples of software used with performance analysis:- NacSport Microsoft CoachesEye Dartfish Opta SportsZone Hudl Prozone Playerdata Scout7 Klipdraw There can be a great difference in what the different software can do, even when they are marketed as doing the same job. For example, if we look at video software, most will have frame by frame viewing or slow motion but the more advanced will also have features such as the integration of external data such as force or heart rate.  (Glaeser, 2017) References GCFLearn.org, 2018.
