Blog 5- Key Performance Indicators (KPI's)

 What are KPI's?

"Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are the critical (key) indicators of progress toward an intended result. KPIs provides a focus for strategic and operational improvement, create an analytical basis for decision making and help focus attention on what matters most"(What is a Key Performance Indicator (KPI)?, 2021)

(PerformaSports, 2018)

What factors make a good KPI?

  • Give target proof of progress towards accomplishing an ideal outcome
  • Measure what is planned to be measured to further improve decision making
  • Be able to compare over time the level of performance change
  • Can track various factors such as effectiveness, efficiency, timelines, quality, personnel performance, project performance, governance, behaviours, compliance,  economics, or resource utilization

Examples of KPI's within performance analysis of football

Figure 1:- The skill requirements (Key Performance Indicators) for the different
positions in football (Hughes et al., 2012)

The KPI's shown in figure 1 would be more suitable to be used in a situation where performance analysis was being used for talent identification. If an analyst was suggesting KPI's for analysing a match it would possibly be more like figure 2.

Figure 2:- KPI's with operational definitions

The operational definitions are created in order to incorporate a broader spectrum of actions for analysis. These definitions are needed in order to ensure valid and reliable data is gathered (Williams, 2012). Also allows for them to be used when discussing the results or comparing to other studies (George, Evangelos, Alexandros and Athanasios, 2009).
