“This is Football!” - Motivational Video
(Alsido Football, 2016)

In a 2015 study into motivational videos and academia, Nicolle Grant found that a motivational video positively affected most students in various ways. They were more accepting of failure, less anxious about their performance and more motivated to work at improving performance. With regards to sport Barwood, Weston, Thelwell and Page, (2009) suggest that music and video can have a beneficial impact on exercise, especially that of a higher intensity as it helps prolong the ability to ward of negative effects. In a study by Tracey, (2011), the athlete who took part used a personal motivational video whilst competing and stated they found it to be useful and very helpful in focusing his attention. During various training and competition phases it enhanced his motivation, helped him to feel more confident and keep on top of his emotions. He used imagery for motivational and cognitive functions and felt more able to stay connected to his goals.

Motivational Videos and Performance Analysis

Figure 1- Match analysis process (Jenkins, Morgan and O’Donoghue, 2007)

Figure 1 shows the approach used in a study by Jenkins, Morgan and O’Donoghue, (2007) which looked at using motivational videos as part of the coaching process and how effective it actually was. From watching match footage, positive highlights are turned into a motivational video for the team to watch before the next match. The team found the videos helped increase their self confidence as well as team confidence before the next match. They recognised motivational aspects with the use of music and also slow motion action replays as they highlighted the better plays as both an individual and as a team. One athlete stated "I think it gave  us  a  positive  outlook  –  for  example  seeing  your  video  before  we  played  made  those  less positive players see that they can do it".

Pettit and Karageorghis (2020) support these findings with their own research, which suggest that the use of video with music increased intrinsic motivation and a video-music-priming combination (priming is a subconscious reaction to a stimulus that affects behaviour later on, without the athlete knowing what or why) enhanced self efficacy.

The videos don't always have to involve an athletes own personal performance, for example they can also include scenes from films, moments from other sports or moments from feel good news stories.
