Blog 1- What Is Performance Analysis

 What is Performance Analysis

(Picture 1)(Toledo, 2017)

If you had asked me in previous years to define 'performance analysis' then my definition would have been very similar to this picture (1). It would have been as basic as deciding on a performance just by watching and giving feedback using words as simple as those in the picture. No other detail, no comments on how to move up on the scale of performance, and possibly most importantly, no factual statistics/evidence to back up my opinion as that would be all it is.... An opinion!!

The reality of performance analysis is a lot more in line with this picture (2). It provides statistical feedback on a performance whereby strength's and weaknesses can be not only suggested but actually evidenced using data gathered throughout a performance.

Performance analysis of sport is the investigation of actual sports performance or performance in training. What distinguishes performance analysis from other disciplines is that it is concerned with actual sports performance rather than activity undertaken in laboratory settings or data gathered from self reports such as questionnaires, focus groups, accounts and interviews. (O'Donoghue, 2010)

Performance Analysis is a specialist discipline involving systematic observations to enhance performance and improve decision making, primarily delivered through the provision of objective statistical (Data Analysis) and visual feedback (Video Analysis). (Performance Analysis - EIS, 2019
